Park Avenue Woman

f/1.8 at 1/800th sec exposure ISO 100 using my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 prime

During a recent four-day trip to New York City I took advantage of the time I spent on foot to practice some street photography. In a place like NYC there are always interesting things to point your camera toward. I threw a bit of a roadblock in my way by using only my Nikkor 50mm prime which, on the Nikon D3000 does not have auto-focus. To make it a little more challenging, I opened the aperture as wide as it would go. This guaranteed anything not perfectly focused would be unacceptably blurred.

Walking north on Park Avenue towards 53rd street I passed a bus stop and noticed this middle aged woman getting out, then holding the doors open for a blind man that followed her. The day was hot -- 98 degrees -- and humid. But heavy cloud cover cast a bluish tint over everything.....except this woman's blazing red dress.

Once she started walking she put her hand up to push her sweaty bangs off her forehead & I got this quick snap of her. That dress and her gesture document the sweltering air hovering over Manhattan on June 24th, 2012.
